March’s Featured Fish: The Fickle Discus!

Discus fish are a genus of freshwater fish native to the Amazon River Basin in South America. They are known for their distinctive, round shape, bright colors, and intricate patterns, which have made them a popular aquarium fish around the world.

Discus fish are typically between 6 and 8 inches in length, with a lifespan of around 10 years in captivity. They are a social species and are best kept in groups of at least six or more.

In the wild, discus fish are found in slow-moving rivers and streams with soft, acidic water. They are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of small animals and plants.

Discus fish are prized for their beauty and can be challenging to care for, as they require clean, well-filtered water and consistent water conditions. They are also sensitive to changes in their environment and require a varied diet to maintain their health and coloration.

Discus fish have an unusual form of parental care: the adults secrete a mucus-like substance onto their skin that provides nourishment for the young. Some reports indicate that both parents are involved in the care of the young, taking turns “nursing the babies.”
